Farewell message from Director of Clinical Training role

Farewell message from Director of Clinical Training role

In April 2013, I was asked to fill in as Director of Clinical Training (DCT, 0.25 FTE) for seven weeks. It is now almost three years later and my stint as acting DCT is at an end. I am hopefully that Gold Coast Health (GCH) will soon appoint a permanent DCT – GCH deserves a person in this position who, like this youthful organisation, is energetic, dynamic and wholehearted.

Please indulge me as I share with you three concepts that have been consolidated for me during my experience in this leadership role. I have managed to compress each from a few thousand words to a couple of statements!

Vulnerability: Embrace it. It is a strength, not a weakness. It is a powerful method by which we can build connection and connectivity. Care about something (or indeed someone) passionately. Be perfectly imperfect.

Gratitude: I am working on converting my guilt at having an easy life into gratitude. I have the privilege of working in an environment (ED) where this is brought into stark relief every shift – where unexpected and undeserved events befall people of all ages, and from all walks of life – and it reminds me everyday to be thankful for big and small things.

Integrity: Hold yourself to account. Lead with courage and not fear. (Courage = to risk failure). Be bold and also hold to account those to whom you report, and those who are your leaders.

It has been an honour to lead this world-class Medical Education Unit with its loyal and hard-working team members, and to work with Neil Smith and his team in the MSSU. It has been a privilege to serve the GCH community, and to have been a part of the developmental journey for junior doctors. I look forward to continuing to work with you from my position back “home” in the Emergency Department.

Whether you are joining us in the new year, continuing your journey with us, or leaving for another opportunity, have a happy, safe and fulfilling 2016!
